The predominately rural county covers 718 square miles and has approximately 13,400 residents. Lowndes County Public Schools strives to provide the best possible education for every child. The system boasts the fact that all but one school has been significantly remodeled over the past five years. The Lowndes County Public School System is constantly improving and refining its services by providing the most effective and efficient method of meeting the needs of the students, parents, and employees. The blueprint for system-wide progress is orchestrated through the implementation of the Education 20/20 Strategic Plan. This framework of accountability focuses on the following five goals: curriculum and instruction, facilities and operations, fiscal accountability, professional development, and student support systems. Our schools have many comprehensive programs which support and enhance teaching and learning. Programs such as: The Echoes of Freedom Choir, The Children’s Theatre Program, dual enrollment with higher education institutions, extended-day programs, distance learning classes and gifted education which provides unique and exciting experiences for our students. Home of the famed NBA player, Ben Wallace, we are proud of our athletic program and boast six recent state high school basketball championships. Our coaches instill pride and teamwork in our students. We are proud of what we have achieved – in our classrooms and on playing fields – but our achievements are not due to complacency and satisfaction with the status quo. The five-member Board of Education, superintendent and members of the educational team are constantly striving to improve teaching and learning through a collaborative effort with all the stakeholders in Lowndes County. It is through this shared commitment that we are able to create “fierce competitors on an economic world stage.”
