Text Box: Mr. Nelson is the Head Start Director for the Lowndes County Board of Education in Hayneville, AL. Under this leadership, a Creative Arts Program (which introduces young children in the program to ballet, piano and visual arts) has been implemented and 100% of the teaching staff has obtained either an Associates or Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education.  It is our mission, "to ensure that our children are responsible citizen, effective communicators, life long learners, and fierce competitors on the economic world stage." Since 2005, Mr. Nelson has served as President of the Region IV Head Start Association, and as Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Management Committee. This region includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, North and South Carolina. Under his leadership, the Association has implemented a five-year plan to hire staff for the Association. Current goals are to increase the membership of staff, parents and partners. He has also served as the President (1994-2004) and Treasurer (1984-1999) of the Alabama Head Start Association. In addition, the Lowndes County Head Start Program has just recently completed their triennial review which is done by a team from across the nation and there were no findings or issues of non compliance in the program. He has served as the director of the Adult Education Program, the Community Education Program, and has also written small grants for the school system for extended day programs. Mr. Nelson is a reviewer for the National Head Start Bureau and has provided policy council and board training for program throughout Alabama. Mr. Nelson is married to Margie Nelson, and is the father of 8 children. He is active in his church and serves on the Deacon Board and is the Assistant Superintendent for the Sunday school. He is active in the community and serves as President of Vision 2000, and is Vice President of the State Board of Directors of the State of Alabama HIPPY program. Mr. Nelson also holds lifelong memberships in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Region IV Head Start Association.
