The Technical
Education cluster consists of a wide variety of courses that
provide students with
specialized skills,
experiences, and technical knowledge necessary for further
education and training at
the postsecondary or
apprenticeship-level and/or entry-level employment. Based upon
interest and
needs, students may
choose to pursue a career objective in a related occupation.
Related occupations
with similar characteristics are grouped together to form career
majors.
The primary goals of
the Technical Education program are as follows:
●
To
introduce students to technical careers
●
To develop
employability skills
●
To
reinforce basic skills
●
To
encourage participation in postsecondary education,
apprenticeship programs, and/or
employment
The Technical
Education curriculum is organized and structured in accordance
with the National Skill
Standards Board's
common framework that encompasses three tiers of skill
standards: core,
concentration, and
specialty. Program learning objectives, curriculum content,
instructional strategies,
teaching materials,
classroom and worksite activities are based, as appropriate, on
the requirements of
existing nationally
recognized, industry-based skill standards and occupational
certifications. This
foundation
facilitates students' acquisition of portable, transferable
knowledge and skills and increases
their prospects for
entry into rewarding, upwardly mobile employment opportunities
that offer
established career
ladder progressions. In addition, students are better prepared
for further, higher-level
job preparation
education and training activities such as completion of an
apprenticeship project or
attainment of a
postsecondary degree.
